  Outage Information

Reporting a Power Outage

Call (952) 492.8255 or (800) 232.2328 seven days a week, 24 hours a day. During major storms, MVEC activates its Automated Telephone Response System. This system prompts you for your area code and telephone number. MVEC encourages all members to call and report their individual outage.

What to do if you have a power outage?
  1. Check to see if everything is off.
  2. Is your meter located on the house or on the yard pole?
Meter is on the house
  1. Check fuses in the main fuse cabinet. Replace both fuses or have fuses checked.
  2. Check breaker in main service cabinet. Flip breaker off and on and set to the “on” position.
  3. If you are not able to check the fuses or breaker, possibly ask a neighbor to check them.
  4. If there is any problem with the meter socket, it is the member’s responsibility to have it repaired or replaced.
  5. Are there any wires or poles down along the main line?
  6. Are there trees on the lines?
  7. Did you hear a loud noise outside? Contact MVEC dispatch for assistance.

Be Prepared and Think Safety
MVEC is committed to reliable service; however we do not have control over severe weather. Below are some simple steps to take if your power is disrupted.
  • Have several flashlights, with new batteries, located in key areas of your home.
  • Assemble an emergency kit
  • Many cordless phones require electricity and may not work during an outage. Have a battery back-up telephone.
  • Don’t go out at night to look at storm damage. There may be a downed power lines or other debris that can cause serious injury.
  • Stay away from downed power lines – always assume these lines are “live.” Call 911 for assistance.
  • Turn off lights and small appliances; unplug computers, TVs and stereos. This helps avoid a surge in usage when the power is restored.
  • Do not use charcoal or gas grills indoors for cooking or heating. They produce carbon monoxide.

In Home Life Support
Because no electric company can guarantee uninterrupted electric service, we strongly recommend having a back up power source and an emergency plan for extended outages.
