Money Saving Energy Wise Programs for Electric Water Heaters

Electric water heaters are priced as an “upfront” rebate when you install it to an Energy Wise program. The electric water heater must be installed within 120 days to qualify for Energy Wise pricing. Water heaters not hooked up to an Energy Wise program within this time frame will be billed at the current retail rate plus tax. If you choose to pick up your water heater from MVEC’s office, please call prior to arriving to ensure the water heater size you want is in stock.

Sizing Recommendations

An 85-gallon electric water heater is recommended for households of up to four persons. For more than four people, the 105-gallon tank would best suit your needs. If you have a Jacuzzi, add one unit to your household count.

Members need to be aware that successful participation in the Energy Wise water heating program depends on having the correct size of water heater for your home and size of family. To confirm your agreement with this policy, please fill out and submit the following:

Policy on Water Heating Sizing

Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative requires water heaters installed on Energy Wise programs to be sized at either 85-gallon or 105-gallon tanks, depending on the size of home and number of people the home could occupy. Energy Wise programs are a voluntary program for MVEC members, which allows water heaters to be controlled during peak energy use periods in exchange for a reduced electric rate. MVEC is not liable if there is a problem with hot water quantity due to a member not following MVEC's size recommendation.

Product UpdateMarathon Water Heater

Since April 2011, Water Heater Innovations no longer includes the 3-inch brass extension fitting (see top of water heater) on Marathon residential water heaters and thermal storage tanks.

Marathon released the following statement: “We found that many 3-inch brass extension fittings were removed from the water heater and discarded. We also found a direct connection to the union on the water heater was quicker.”

In place of the 3-inch brass extension, there will now be a plastic cap, which needs to be removed prior to connection. Pipe sealant should not be applied because a rubber seal ring is now used to make the connection.
