We’ve had several questions from concerned members this past week regarding Canadian tariffs and the impact on MVEC power. MVEC is a distribution cooperative. We don’t generate power here in Jordan. We purchase wholesale power from two generation and transmission cooperatives, Great River Energy in Maple Grove and Basin Electric Power Cooperative in Bismarck.
Fortunately, GRE expects little impact on electric costs or reliability. Basin has indicated the same. The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) monitors and operates the electric grid across 15 U.S. states and Manitoba. This includes Minnesota and MVEC.
In 2024, only 2% of GRE’s energy came from Manitoba Hydro, and less than 1% of MISO’s total energy came from Canadian imports—about the size of one power plant. While natural gas prices may rise, the electricity market should remain stable at this time.
