What is the process of getting a new service hooked up?
First, an account must be set up. This can be done online. Your electrician will need to install the meter socket and service panel, apply for a state electrical permit and notify MVEC that the service is ready. Once MVEC is notified, an engineer will visit the site and determine what is needed for installation. Charges will be assessed, and payment must be received before scheduling.* Gopher State One Call is contacted, and then the service order is given to the crews. Completion may take up to two or three weeks.
*Pre-approved builders and accounts set up in the homeowner’s name do not require prepayment. To pay, you can call MVEC’s Touch-n-Go Line at 952-492-8333 or pay online. Please remember to have your account number handy.
Where should I place the meter socket?
In a typical housing development, the meter socket should be placed on the house corner nearest to MVEC’s power source (transformer, pedestal or wire stub). Please call MVEC to determine which lot corner the dedicated power source is located.
If the meter socket is located beyond the house’s closest corner, on the back of the house or on the side opposite of the power source, additional charges will apply.
For rural or non-typical installations, a site visit by an engineer may be required to determine best placement of the meter socket and other equipment.
What kind of meter socket is required?
For houses 400-amp and less, a special dual meter socket is required. The second meter socket is dedicated for EnergyWise usage. These can be obtained at MVEC’s office. Please call ahead to arrange for pickup.
For sheds or barns, a single meter socket may be used. All feed-through meter sockets must have a bypass lever.
I am building on a larger lot/in a rural area. Are there additional requirements?
You may need to visit with an engineer on site to determine the best location of wire and equipment. You may be required to sign a line installation agreement, and an easement may also be needed.
My builder is requesting a temporary service. How is this done?
Your electrician will need to set up a temporary service at MVEC’s power source on the lot corner, complete with provisions for a simple hookup by MVEC’s maintenance crew. As with a permanent service, the electrician will need to obtain a state electrical permit and notify MVEC that the service is ready. Additional charges will apply. A typical time frame for connection is about 3 business days.
Are there additional charges in winter?
Weather-related charges will assessed when conditions create additional labor or alternative installation methods. These usually happen between October and April, but may occur anytime there is excessive rain, mud, snow or frost.
