Scammers target utility customers
BEWARE of anyone who calls or knocks on your door claiming to be an MVEC employee.
Scammers are increasingly targeting our members by phone, email, or in person pretending to be from MVEC. These imposters tell you your power will be disconnected in 30 minutes unless you pay now, or they offer to sell you products or services.
Warning signs that it might be a scam:
- You receive an unscheduled visit or unsolicited phone call from someone claiming to be an MVEC employee.
- Someone claiming to be an MVEC employee threatens to cut off your electric service unless you pay immediately.
- They demand you pay your MVEC bill via gift card, prepaid credit card, wire currency, or even cryptocurrency.
- You notice payments on your credit card or bank statement for accounts you did not open.
- You receive an email that you cannot confirm is from MVEC.
- A caller claiming to be an MVEC employee asks for bank account or credit card information.
- You receive an unsolicited utility equipment inspection, energy audit, solar panel installation, home security, or any other salesperson at your home.
- Don’t be fooled by caller ID numbers that can appear as MVEC’s phone number. This is called “spoofing.”
You can pay your bill and check your account details safely and securely by using SmartHub. If you don’t already have a SmartHub account, sign up today and have total control of your MVEC electric account. To avoid scams, make sure you are the person to initiate payments to MVEC, whether by phone, mail, or online.
MVEC does not engage in door-to-door sales of solar panels, nor do we have contractual affiliations with any such entities. If members are ever concerned with safety, they should call your local authorities to report the incident.
If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from MVEC, you may confirm the call by hanging up and calling us back at 952-492-2313.
