MVEC’s Green Source program gives individual members the option of purchasing renewable energy through a proposed Cooperative Solar Community or through an established Renewable Energy Certificate program. Only those who subscribe to a program pay for GreenSource. Costs are not passed down to non-subscribing members.
Cooperative Solar Community
MVEC is now accepting enrollments from residential and commercial members who wish to participate in a new 1-megawatt Cooperative Solar Array to be built within MVEC’s service area (TBD). A commitment from approximately 300 members signing a 10-year contract is needed. MVEC is accepting sign-ups until Oct. 31, 2018, at which time member interest in this project will be evaluated.
Solar Array Costs for Residential Members*
The cost to offset 1,000 kWh hours of electric use (the average MVEC member’s monthly household usage) would be:
- Members who participate in an EnergyWise program: $16 a month
- Members who do not participate in an EnergyWise program: $36 a month
For complete details, view the Solar Community contract by selecting the button below.
*Commercial members, please check with your key account executive
Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)
Residential and commercial members can purchase blocks of renewable wind or solar energy. With renewable energy certificates, or RECs, electricity is not produced locally; renewable energy development is promoted indirectly.
The average household uses 1,000 kilowatt hours a month. By participating in a REC program, that electric usage would be completely offset in renewable energy with the purchase of:
- Wind RECs – $.10 per 100 kWh block
- Solar RECs – $.30 per 100 kWh block
You may purchase as many blocks of RECs as you would like, up to your average annual electric usage. Because you are not under any contract, you may leave the program whenever you wish.
