Scammers typically use phone, in-person, and online tactics to target customers.
Scammers will try anything to pressure customers into providing their personal information, especially during the holidays when people are preoccupied. If you are ever asked to pay your utility bill with a gift card or through a third-party transaction app, such as Cash App or Venmo, it’s a scam.
If you receive a phone call demanding immediate payment of your electric bill, hang up. Call MVEC Member Service at 952-492-2313 to confirm your account status. We will tell you if your account is up to date or whether a payment is due.
Remember, utilities will never request a payment with a gift card or through a third-party app. Always use your authorized payment methods when paying your utility bills.
