In the 1930s, only the most affluent farmers and people in and near towns could get “the electric.” The majority of rural people worked and lived without power and light. President Franklin D. Roosevelt helped bring electricity to rural areas as part of his New Deal legislation.
On March 6, 1937, three electric organizations from Carver, Le Sueur, and Scott counties – which lacked the support to operate independently – were incorporated as The Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative.
Through the years, the cooperative has continued to grow, thanks to its location in one of the fastest-growing areas of Minnesota. Scott County, where MVEC is headquartered, has experienced a 45 percent in growth since the year 2000.
MVEC now provides reliable electric service to 48,000+ meters across a 968-square-mile service area, encompassing nine counties: Blue Earth, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Le Sueur, Rice, Scott, Sibley, and Waseca.
